Baer Winery, Woodinville (Nov, 2022)

I've noticed Baer wine for years, and finally had to try it out. I visited the Baer Winery tasting room at the nice boutique-style Woodin Creek location. But, they also have another tasting room in the Warehouse district.

After the unfortunate passing of Lance Baer in 2007, Erica Orr took over as winemaker, while Lance's father and sister Les and Lisa continue operations as owners.

Baer sources from Stillwater Creek Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA. Their flagship wines, as developed by Lance, include the "feminine" Ursa - a Merlot and Cabernet Franc Blend, and Arctos - a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon blend.

Their tasting offerings were generous.

Shard

100% Chardonnay

"This is a white wine style originated by our founder Lance Baer. No Oak, No Malo; very clean and fresh. "

$22

2018 Star

100% Merlot

"This 100% Merlot has all the mouth watering flavors that Baer and Stillwater Creek Vineyards are known for. Dominant red cherry and currant gives way to hints of black tea and thyme. Enjoy with lasagna or eggplant ravioli."

$38

Rating 4.0

2018 Ursa

38% Merlot, 38% Cab. Franc. 21% Cab. Sauv., 3% Petit Verdot

"Layers of ripe cherry and plum, culinary herbs like dried sage and bay leaf, vanilla and roast coffee come together in delicious harmony. It's dense and complex but polished and drinkable."

$40

Rating 4.2

2018 Cabernet Franc

80% Cab. Franc, 20% Merlot

"Lighter bodied and a little bit less serious than the flagship Ursa. the Cab Franc smells of blackberry and currant, black licorice and cedar. The feel in the mouth is fresh and coolly refreshing."

$38

Rating 4.1

Rosé

100% Cab. Franc

"Whole Cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel drums with one saignee barrel. Nose of ripe nectarine, cantaloupe and Rainer cherry. Dry with clean mineral finish."

$22

2018 Arctos

84% Cab. Sauv., 12% Petit Verdot

"This dense, ripe, and savory blackberry Cabernet/Petit Verdot showcases soy sauce, teriyaki, Chinese plum sauce, and black olives; backed up with serious structure and a long, rich finish. Steak approved."

$47

Rating 4.5

2018 Callisto

41% Syrah, 37% Cab. Sauv., 22% Petit Verdot

"Bigger and bolder than either the Ursa or the Cab Franc, the Callisto is inky black in color. The Syrah here lends a super silky texture, meaty richness and spicy black pepper character to the blend. The Cab provides the structural backbone, and it brings the classic black cherry and black olive aromatics. The Petit Verdot is floral and blueberry with a base note of black coffee."

$42

Rating 4.4

2018 Malbec

"Absolutely inky: wood smoke, black pepper, cardamom and ginger waft from this black, purple Malbec. Fresh and bright acidity showcases plush boysenberry. Thai food 5 stars, if you dare."

$38

Rating 4.1

Baer Winery was a pleasant experience. Their tasting room in Woodin Creek is cozy, and staff was knowledgable and accomodating. Their wines were overall good, and a very reasonable price point. In the end I favored their 2018 Arctos and 2018 Callisto.
